Through the Wachau on the Way of St James

"Buen Camino" on the Way of St James!

Pilgrims in the Wachau

Since the Wachau section of the Way of St James between Göttweig Abbey and Melk Abbey opened in 2005, more and more people walk this pilgrimage route through the Wachau region towards Spain.

Let us explain: legend has it that the remains of St James are located in the Galician city of Santiago de Compostela. Since the middle ages, his tomb has been the most important pilgrimage site in Christiandom after Jerusalem.

From monasteries and artistic treasures...

Pilgrims have always particularly enjoyed stops at monasteries, as their architecture and artistic treasures have always been sights worth seeing. Along the Austrian section of the Way of St James, in the Wachau region, are the Göttweig and Melk Benedictine abbeys. Both are designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites and there are also other monasteries and churches whose beautiful Baroque splendour excites visitors. Additional recommended sites along the path are the Maria Langegg pilgrimage church, the Aggstein castle ruins, and the hammermill and the charterhouse in Aggsbach.
